Transition-Optimal Token Distribution

چکیده
There is given a graph, that models a communication network of a multi-processor system, and there are tokens (jobs) allocated to nodes of the graph. The task is to distribute the tokens evenly, subject to the constraint that they may be moved only along the edges of the graph. The cost of a distribution strategy is measured as the total number of operations of moving a token along an edge. An algorithm for general graphs is developed, by reduction to a maximum-ow minimum-cost problem, that nds a cost-optimal distribution strategy, given a graph and an initial token allocation. The main result is an algorithm for graphs that are lines of nodes; it nds the distribution strategy in time O(n), for a line of n nodes.

Strongly Adaptive Token Distribution 1
The token distribution (TD) problem, an abstract static variant of load balancing, is defined as follows: let M be a (parallel processor) network with setP of processors. Initially, each processor P ∈ P has a certain amount l(P) of tokens. The goal of a TD algorithm, run on M , is to distribute the tokens evenly among the processors. In this paper we introduce the notion of strongly adaptive TD...

متن کاملRapid Convergence of a Local Load Balancing Algorithm for Asynchronous Rings
We consider the problem of load balancing in a ring network. We present an analysis of the following local algorithm. In each step, each node of the ring examines the number of tokens at its clockwise neighbor and sends a token to the neighbor if the neighbor has fewer tokens. We show that in a synchronous model, for any initial token distribution b on an n-node ring, the algorithm converges to...
متن کاملDimension-exchange algorithms for token distribution on tree-connected architectures
Load balancing on a multi-processor system involves redistributing tasks among processors so that each processor has roughly the same amount of work to perform. The token-distribution problem is a static variant of the load balancing problem for the case in which the workloads in the system cannot be divided arbitrarily; that is, where each token represents an atomic element of work. A scalable...
متن کاملEstimating the Parameters for Linking Unstandardized References with the Matrix Comparator
This paper discusses recent research on methods for estimating configuration parameters for the Matrix Comparator used for linking unstandardized or heterogeneously standardized references. The matrix comparator computes the aggregate similarity between the tokens (words) in a pair of references. The two most critical parameters for the matrix comparator for obtaining the best linking results a...
